Fertilizing orchids without causing root rot is the biggest question in semi-hydroponics. I share a three-step process: soak, spray, wipe. Applied to both semi-hydroponic growing methods, it helps orchid roots grow fast and strong.
With the pure water growing method, the roots are very sensitive. Each time you fertilize, change the water at the same time and rinse the roots thoroughly to remove impurities. Use fertilizer at a very diluted concentration.

Get The Guide →Today, I fertilize orchids using banana GE. Banana GE helps stimulate root growth and promote strong flowering. You only need about 1 Tbsp of banana GE and dilute it with 1 L of water.
The secret here is to soak for only 15 to 20 minutes. This is the golden time that allows the roots to absorb enough nutrients without suffocating. The frequency is about once every 7 to 10 days.
After soaking for about 20 minutes, take the plant out and place it back into the hydroponic pot. Add water so that the water level just lightly touches the roots. Keep the reservoir shallow to avoid suffocating the root zone.

Semi-Hydroponic Orchid Fertilization
Pure Water Method Steps
Rinse roots thoroughly and refresh the water before every feed. Prepare a very dilute banana GE solution at 1 Tbsp per 1 L of water. Soak roots for 15 to 20 minutes, then set the pot so water just touches the root tips.

Maintain a 7 to 10 day fertilizing rhythm. Keep the solution gentle to protect sensitive roots. Watch for firm, green root tips as a sign of good uptake.

Semi-Hydroponic Orchid Fertilization
Gravel Medium Method
The gravel acts as a natural filter, helping retain moisture and nutrients for the roots when you water from above. With this method, soak the roots and the gravel medium in the liquid fertilizer solution for about 15 to 20 minutes. After soaking, take the plant out of the fertilizer solution.

Pour water into the hydroponic pot so that the water level just barely touches the roots. Keep the top layer of gravel breathable. Avoid packing the medium too tightly.

Spray the Leaves
Mist the leaves with fertilizer in the morning. This is where the plant absorbs nutrients fastest through the stomata. Mist early in the morning to avoid leaf burn.

Wipe the Leaves
The final step, but extremely important, is to wipe the leaves with a diluted fertilizer solution. This helps remove dust, improves photosynthesis, enhances nutrient absorption, and keeps the leaves glossy and professional-looking. A clean leaf is a healthy leaf, extremely effective in preventing fungal diseases.

Wiping the leaves also helps the plant breathe better and improves its appearance. Use a soft cloth and refresh the solution as it gets dirty. Avoid wiping the undersides too harshly.

Placement and Light
Place the orchid pot in a location with gentle light and good airflow. Avoid harsh midday sunlight to prevent leaf burn and damage to the roots. Keep temperatures stable and the air moving.

And this is the result after 10 days. You can see the orchid has clearly improved with greener and firmer leaves. The roots have started to grow strongly, which shows that the plant is recovering very well and absorbing nutrients more effectively.
This orchid has bloomed beautifully with thick and glossy petals, vibrant color, and long-lasting flowers. Maintain the cycle and keep the reservoir shallow. Watch hydration and feeding closely during active growth.

Final Thoughts
Fertilize gently and consistently: soak 15 to 20 minutes, spray in the morning, wipe the leaves. Keep water fresh, maintain a shallow reservoir, and provide bright, gentle light with airflow. Simple steps, strong roots, and lasting blooms.
